As requested: Paula Abdul claims a 1992 plane crash took her out of the spotlight. The NTSB has no record of it ever happening.

2020.09.17 17:45 ketchupsunshine As requested: Paula Abdul claims a 1992 plane crash took her out of the spotlight. The NTSB has no record of it ever happening.

On the Paula Abdul post a couple weeks ago, I commented that I had a write-up that was almost ready to go. This goes far more in depth than that post and was heavily requested so hopefully it does not get removed this time.
In July I saw this comment and decided to look up the plane crash story, expecting it to be easily explainable one way or another. But instead I wound up with differing accounts from Paula Abdul herself, articles claiming she was lying, and lots of random gossip. So I figured I’d try to piece it together myself.
The story goes like this:
In 1992 1, Paula Abdul was flying from a performance in St. Louis to Denver while on her Under My Spell Tour (sometimes called the “Spellbound” tour, the name of the album she was promoting at this time). Then, over a cornfield in Iowa, Abdul in 2019 said the following took place:
“It all happened when I boarded a seven-seater plane and an hour into the flight one of the engines blew up and the right wing caught fire and everything went black...I woke up in the hospital only to find that I had crushed my cervical spine, leaving me partially paralyzed.”
She also stated that she underwent 15 spinal surgeries as a result of her injuries both from this and prior incidents.
But 2019 was not the first time she told this story. According to Abdul in 2005, she took one day off and she continued to perform. The 2005 account mostly matched her earliest mention of the accident in 2003. Then, in 2019, she described waking up in the hospital, partially paralyzed. The story changes in bits every time, and there is no documented mention of it at all before Abdul’s 2003 NBC interview. It’s stranger the more you read about it, and there don’t seem to be concrete answers.
What we do know for sure is that Paula Abdul’s career took a hit shortly after the time she claims the crash took place. Abdul’s next era following Spellbound, Head Over Heels, was her worst selling release. She was divorced twice between 1994 and 1998. Between her Spellbound era and about 1996, Abdul seemed to stay out of the spotlight. Part of this was due to her seeking treatment for her bulimia in 1994, which came with rumors that she was being treated for opioid addiction at the same time. Her career and personal life seemed to have gone downhill after her Under Your Spell tour, and it’s debated whether this was because of her plane crash, or whether the plane crash was invented to sweep this under the rug.

There are a few aspects of Abdul’s story that are pointed to as proof that she is lying.
Abdul claims to have performed in St. Louis before the fateful flight, heading to Denver, and to have boarded immediately following this performance. Her own website does not list a St. Louis tour date (although there is a date for Greenwood Village, near Denver, on June 10, 1992). The Wikipedia page for the tour uses the same dates as Abdul’s website. This has been used by some theorists as proof that the whole story is fabricated, since it gives the appearance that there wouldn’t have been a St. Louis to Denver flight at all. However, while Abdul’s own website lacks any mention of these dates, there is some evidence she may have flown from St. Louis to Denver between June 19 and June 22, 1992. 2 Rich Juzwiak at Jezebel dug up records that give us a possible date for the alleged crash. The Jezebel article cites a St. Louis Post Dispatch article from June 21, 1992, talking about a Paula Abdul concert the previous Friday at the Riverport Ampitheater. This sets a date of June 19, 1992 for St. Louis. The same Jezebel article also cites an Entertainment Weekly article from September 25, 1992, which refers to Abdul performing a show at the Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre in a suburb of Denver on June 22. Abdul’s website lists no shows between the June 10 show in Greenwood Village and the June 23 show in Seattle. This means that there is a gap that these other two shows fit into, although it is odd they aren’t listed as part of the tour despite being part of the tour.
EDIT: As referenced in footnote 2, the Jezebel article had an edit claiming that a reader had found a Kansas City Star article listing a June 20, 1992 date at the Sandstone Ampitheater in Bonner Springs, outside of Kansas City. I couldn't find this as I was writing, but u/bookdrops dug up this Springfield News-Leader article from June 19, 1992 that references the same June 20 date at the Sandstone Ampitheater. This means that there was a date between the St. Louis and Denver shows that have been found, and to me this rules out there being a St. Louis to Denver flight at all. She could have mistaken Kansas City for St. Louis or misremembered, but her stated flight path doesn't seem to have happened.
Possible drug addiction:
Abdul’s 2009 Ladies Home Journal interview describes her spending Thanksgiving 2008 weaning herself off of a painkiller addiction:
The rumors that her sometimes-bizarre behavior was fueled by drugs just may have been true. Abdul was taking heavy-duty pain killers, though she claims she never shot an Idol episode under the influence. But last Thanksgiving, determined to overcome her habit, she checked into the La Costa Resort and Spa, in Carlsbad, California, to wean herself off her medications in one fell swoop. "I could have killed myself.... Withdrawal -- it's the worst thing," she says. "I was freezing cold, then sweating hot, then chattering and in so much pain, it was excruciating. But at my very core, I did not like existing the way I had been.”
Fans and tabloids during Abdul’s run as an American Idol judge often commented on her strange behavior, although she was quick to explain it away. The LHJ interview had direct quotes from her talking about her struggle with drug addiction.
...And then Paula Abdul went on record saying she had never said those things. In fact, according to her, she has never even been drunk. Abdul does not seem to have refuted that she went to a place called La Costa in Carlsbad, California, but she was adamant that it was just a normal spa and she had been there for only three days. While there is a rehab center in Carlsbad called La Costa, the article refers to “La Costa Resort and Spa”, which is an actual resort and spa.
Despite Abdul’s denials, there is still rampant speculation that she is or was addicted to painkillers. There’s certainly no clear-cut evidence proving she was ever an addict, but it’s also nearly impossible to disprove something. Especially when there is so much circumstantial evidence, such as her “strange” behavior that the tabloids latched onto.
Worth noting for this point is the fact that Abdul has consistently been open about her diagnosis with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, an incredibly painful condition. This, in conjunction with her (also consistent) story about a cheerleading accident in high school followed by several smaller car accidents over the years, means that Paula Abdul already has a pretty good reason to be using painkillers. RSD and any severe chronic pain can sometimes also cause people to seem “spacey” or “loopy”, which could also explain why so many people thought she was acting strange during the time she was on American Idol.
Crash records:
The strongest piece of evidence cited by those who believe Paula Abdul is lying is the lack of evidence. There seems to be no record of this crash ever having happened. Her tour ran from October 1991 to August 1992 and despite having searched accident records 3 for that timespan I have been unable to find any record of this crash. I’ll admit to not being knowledgeable about aviation records, but it also seems telling that no one else has been able to find these records either. Abdul has denounced those who doubt her claims and while I can’t speak definitively, I would think she or her publicist would have pointed to an NTSB report if there was one.
Additionally, Abdul has been quoted several times as saying the plane landed in a cornfield in Iowa. This doesn’t fit with her claim that the flight was from St. Louis to Denver. The flight she claims to have taken is pretty much straight west, and crashing in Iowa would require a significant detour north. Not impossible, but certainly implausible at least from a layman’s understanding of air travel.
There is an NTSB report for an eight seater (not seven) plane crashing into a field in Nebraska (not Iowa), a full month before the Under My Spell tour began. It also seems to have taken off in Nebraska with an intended destination elsewhere in Nebraska, rather than going to either St. Louis or Denver, and it crashed shortly after takeoff rather than the claimed forty minutes to an hour into the flight. I cannot find any news about what Abdul would’ve been doing in Nebraska in September 1991, so I don’t believe this is the accident. There is also a record of an accident in Englewood, Colorado on June 10, 1992. Paula Abdul had a concert in nearby Greenwood Village on the same day, but the description of the plane and accident do not match her story at all. These two are the only records that I have seen that match any part of her story, and neither is a good fit.

Theory 1: Paula Abdul was actually in some sort of incident on a plane in 1992, but has embellished what happened and this is why no one has been able to track down records of the event. The most common theory in this camp is that the plane experienced some turbulence, she wasn’t wearing her seatbelt, and she experienced an injury. This possibly compounded with previous injuries (such as the cheerleading accident she often mentions in conjunction with the plane crash story) and caused severe harm, but the plane did not crash. There’s a lot of overlap between this theory and the others, and how much overlap exists between theories depends on who you ask.
Theory 2: Paula Abdul was not in any aviation accidents in 1992 and she is using this story to cover up painkiller use and/or her extended absence from the limelight before her American Idol job.
One of these theories revolves around the idea that Paula invented the plane crash in 2003, after regaining the limelight as an American Idol judge, to give herself an excuse for falling out of the public eye and to distract from the downturn in her career and personal life during this period. The other, more popular theory, is that she used the plane crash as an excuse to either explain away her loopy behavior during her American Idol years as non-drug related (if you believe 2005 USA Today “I have never been addicted to anything” Paula Abdul) or to excuse it as being caused by medication prescribed to her for her injuries.
Theory 3: Paula Abdul is telling the truth about being in a crash and her story was brought into doubt due to some unfortunate gaps in information, such as the NTSB records being incomplete/the accident not being reported at all, her own choice to keep quiet for an extended period of time, and miscommunications about whether or not she was using pain medication. There is enough room for the basic story to be true. Admittedly, the story has changed so much that at least some versions will be lies even if one version was the truth. If this is the case I will certainly apologize for fueling speculation otherwise...but I would consider this the least likely option.

Regardless of whatever the actual story is regarding the plane crash, it’s pretty clear that Paula Abdul struggles with chronic pain and I do not intend to make light of this at all or to shame her if she has struggled with addiction. It’s just very strange that there is no proof of this event ever happening. Did Paula Abdul get injured on a plane in 1992? Was she covering for a painkiller addiction, and was that part of why she went to rehab in 1994? Was she covering for being out of the spotlight? Is Paula Abdul actually sober like she claims, and is her strange behavior actually just her being Paula Abdul rather than drugs or alcohol? Was this a ploy for attention that ripped off of Gloria Estefan’s accident? Why did it take eleven years after the alleged accident for there to be a single documented mention of it? I’m very curious what everyone else thinks about this case.
My personal theory (which is based as much on gut feelings as it is on actual information, since the info is so spotty) is that she was on a plane during the Under My Spell tour, wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, and was injured when the plane experienced turbulence mid-flight. This compounded her existing spinal injuries and her condition deteriorated for several years until around 1994 her health problems prevented her from working. She took a break from the limelight to recover, came back for American Idol, and decided to embellish her story to garner sympathy and distract from the other issues (the relative commercial failure of Head Over Heels, her divorces) that contributed to her break. I’m unsure on whether or not she had an addiction to painkillers but I lean towards “no”. Her story of using alternative medicine in response to her injuries from the crash partially convinced me that the strange behavior people point to as proof of her being on drugs is actually just her being herself. She seems like a bit of an odd duck.

1 Some articles list 1993 as the date of the crash, including some quotes from Abdul herself, but in the grand scheme of things this did not seem particularly significant. The tour she mentions ran from 1991 to 1992, and most articles state 1992. Because of this I am assuming that this is a mistake rather than an actual lie. Specifically the 2009 Ladies Home Journal interview says she was in a car accident in 1992 that caused a neck injury, and places the plane crash in 1993. This is the closest thing to a “contradictory” date I have seen but it also is not a quote from Paula Abdul herself. Make of this what you will.
2 According to an edit in the Jezebel story, there was a Kansas City Star article claiming Abdul had performed in Kansas City on June 20, 1992, which would basically rule out a St. Louis to Denver flight. However, I’ve tried searching and can’t find this article. If anyone is able to find it I’d be happy to edit it in, but I’m not including information I can’t verify. EDIT: Link to confirmation of Sandstone Amphitheater concert, so there is now proof of this and I have edited the post accordingly.
3 This specific link has a disclaimer that records have only been natively uploaded since 1996. So although there are pre-1996 records available on this site, there is no guarantee that these records are complete. The other link provided does not contain the same disclaimer and has far more complete records, but I have no way to verify that they are 100% complete.

2020.08.05 12:33 IAMB4TMAN DKNG - Fundamental DD Part II - DKNG

Not Financial Advice (NFA)
Warning: Wall of Text. If you hate reading just skim through the bolded/italicized
Ever since I publicized my findings on DKNG, the stock has underperformed & probably has fucked a lot of people here, especially given the overly bullish stance back in June. Unless you took my advice & got into Puts then, congrats, welcome to tendie town. For the ADHD retards, here’s what the next wall of text is going to summarize: I believe at the current price of ~$30, the stock is oversold.
A tech-focused, high-growth Company that has made sports betting easy to understand with an aesthetically pleasing interface similar to how Robinhood has neatly laid out stock market gimmicks so even high-schoolers can make sense of it I believe, is underpriced at these levels.
Let’s get into some details as to why the stock has underperformed:
First off, the news slate revolving sports with the rumored delay/cancellation of the MLB season & the NFL watching from the sidelines is in my view, just a part of why the stock has underperformed. We’ll revisit this later in this post, but I want to focus on the drivers of the stock’s recent underperformance, & why these factors are now in the rearview mirror.
Part I – The Past Has Passed – SPAC-related Equity Dilution
History lesson first: DKNG went public via a SPAC merger, which has exploded in popularity recently. Anyone serious about analyzing stocks going forward needs to do their homework on this, Google is your friend.
A feature of most SPAC merger to public listings that creates a headwind to near-term share prices are embedded equity dilution events, usually in the form of earn-outs (stock bonuses to execs, the SPAC sponsor) & conversion of Warrants.
On 5/24, the earn-outs were triggered, adding 6m shares to the share count.
On 6/26, 16.3m warrants converted to DKNG, netting them ~$188m of cash.
Stepping back a little, in addition to the above, on 6/18 DKNG launched a follow-on equity offering of 16M shares @ $40/Share [1], receiving $621M in proceeds.
The last part is tricky to understand from a dilution perspective. To simplify, historically it’s almost a coin toss whether a Company’s shares outperform on the onset of an equity offering. While issuing shares does dilute the existing shareholder base, it theoretically shouldn’t, if the proceeds from the offering are earmarked for investments/projects that yield outsized returns. This is the reality for the long term, theory for the short-term. For the short-term, the ‘reality’ isn’t that the proceeds will be used for investments/projects that yield outsized returns, it is more about how convincing management is to investors that the investments they intend to pursue with the proceeds will outweigh the dilutive effects of issuing incremental shares. That’s a mouthful, but hopefully you get what I’m trying to convey.
All of this stuff put together – the Company has increased its share count by ~39M, but now has a whopping ~$1.4Bn of cash [2]. More on this in the next section.
Part II – MLB News Should Not Fucking Matter & DKNG Is Positioned As the Leading Online/Mobile Sports Platform
DKNG should not be so tied to MLB news or any of this shit as the ongoing success of the NBA/NHL season + Soccer in Europe has effectively created a blueprint on how to regulate player behavior so that they maintain professionalism amidst the pandemic. I’m going out on a whim here, but I truly think the MLB threatening a cancellation of the season is pure posturing to get these fuckers to behave appropriately. Maybe a ‘bubble’ is what it takes to get these players to focus on their jobs instead of going out & contracting COVID, but I argue that isn’t necessarily required given Soccer in Europe. So there’s already a proven path here without the need for a bubble in Soccer, so MLB/NFL should be fine, and execs need to study how they got it done in Europe. Okay, back to some facts.
Anecdotally, I’ve kept in touch with a handful of sports bookies from California to New York & even internationally about what they’re seeing – all of them say that since the NBA season started on 7/30 & since Soccer (especially the Premier League) resumed in June, along with other leagues like La Liga & Serie A, they’ve seen massive increases in betting.
These numbers are also showing up in the official data [3]:
REMEMBER: This is for June only! No NBA, No NHL, No MLB, just Soccer, Golf, NASCAR & UFC.
The data clearly shows that there was a ton of pent-up sports betting demand, which leads one Wall St. analyst to think that betting on the NBA/NHL could ABSORB the MLB’s sports betting handle (handle = total $ size of sports bet) [5]. Remember, the MLB season is still ongoing, with games being played. The entire focus is on the Miami Marlins & St. Louis Cardinals. Fucking retards.
Additionally, I want to remind everyone that is the #1 Fantasy sports website in the U.S. [6]. Also, since April 2020 site visitations are up +86% [7] & Google Search Trends for “Draft Kings” is up ~3x compared to PRE-COVID levels [8]. What does this mean? They are piquing more people’s curiosity than prior to COVID/ongoing slate of sports.
This is important because remember that ~$1.4Bn chest full of cash I mentioned DKNG had assembled earlier? Well, that money is being put to work & results are already coming in, which is exactly what DKNG intended to do with it.
Part III – Legalization of Sports Betting in the U.S.
I could write a fucking bible on this topic alone, but for now we’ll stick to some basics. Due to COVID, it’s easy to understand that each State’s financial situation is clearly in shit. Because of this, you better believe that these guys are going to start taking a hard look at how they can extract additional tax revenues, & what’s one of the easiest ways to do this? Legalization & taxation of gambling.
The big players: CA, TX, FL & NY. First, CA pushing its legislation out to 2023 was fucked up, but here’s a twist I want to add to this: Anything that has to do with gambling in CA you better believe is lobbied against by not just the Tribal casino owners in CA, but by the deep pockets of Las Vegas money. Similar thing can be said for FL, but let’s take a look at some actions by LV/nationwide gambling companies that are starting to align financial incentives with guys like DKNG.
So it’s safe to say going forward, nationwide legalization of sports betting will reap rewards for everyone involved, & no longer be something LV money is completely focused on safeguarding.
Let’s also not forget that DKNG didn’t become the Company they are today because of their fancy app, but because their management team has a HISTORY of navigating the U.S.’s legal framework to get what they want out of it.
These guys are at the cutting edge of creating legal frameworks to successfully launch their products & now with more of their ‘competitors’ financially aligned with them, combined with financial deterioration of State budgets, we should see an overweighting of good news vs. bad on the legal front.
Final Part – Share Price Targets
Under-fucking priced at anything below $42.50
Near-term catalysts:
8/14: DKNG files 2Q’20 results, might be shitty, but you can bet that the Earnings Call is going to contain rhetoric on how massive the uptick in sports betting has been since late June/July.
Sometime from now until November: NY releases ‘study’ by Spectrum Gaming on online/mobile sports betting.
8/20 – 9/7: PGA Championship for FedEx Cup Title
9/5 – KY Derby
9/10: NFL KickOff Game
9/17: PGA U.S. Open Start Date
Month of October: NBA/NHL Playoffs
10/1: Estimated launch of online sports betting in TN

2020.03.31 02:56 MitaAltair Love In the Time of the CoronaVirus

Saw this article and thought it would be helpful and provide some perspective
#StaytheFuckHome & read Dr. Susan Block's missive from edge of the Coronapocalypse, including Mother Nature's perspective, fighting a war without bombs (the Bonobo Way), SEX in isolation (let's all cheer for masturbation) and LoVE in the Time of Coronavirus:

by Dr. Susan Block.
It’s Spring, and nature is blooming. Coronavirus has done (temporarily, at least) what no Paris Agreement, Green New Deal, man, woman or even that scrappy teen, Greta Thunberg (who may have also contracted COVID-19), could do. It has shut down a huge amount of the industrial, transportation and pollution-belching business activity that is destroying life on earth.
Tragically and terrifyingly, this comes at the expense of thousands of human lives (so far), the health of millions and the mental health of billions.
Ironically, it comes—like an ecogasm—to the benefit of the rest of world.
With so many Anthropocene operations shut down, the air is noticeably cleaner in many areas. We can see the difference—at least in waves. As the disease overtook China and the government ordered the shutdown of factories and other businesses, the smog lifted, nitrogen dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions lowered, and the skies brightened so much you could see the difference in satellite images.
Now that the Chinese seem to be getting a handle on the virus, people are back at work and pollution is resurfacing. But at the moment, almost every other country is struggling to contain the viral varmint with quarantines, handwashing tutorials and shelter-in-place virtual sing-a-longs, trying to heed the medical experts’ advice to (despite our Trumpublican representatives pushing us to get back to “normal” and #DiefortheDow) scrap all nonessential activity and #StaytheFuckHome.
So, throughout the planet—notably in Europe—the skies, streets and waterways are clearing up from human-generated debris. In Thailand and Japan, gangs of monkeys and deer roam streets now devoid of tourists. Dolphins and small fish are swimming in the Venice Canal (or just some canal near Venice, but it’s still impressive). It’s Mother Nature’s own Homemade Green New Deal.
It’s a Coronavirus Spring (with apologies to Rachel Carson).
Sounds almost lovely. However, unless you just hate human beings, it’s not lovely at all.
A War Without Bombs
As the virus spreads throughout humanity, it is waging a vicious World War that, despite all our bombs and Pentagons, we are not at all prepared to fight.
Yet fight we must—for our individual lives, and for our neighbors whose lives are deeply intertwined with ours.
They always have been, of course. Humans, like bonobos and common chimpanzees, are an intensely social, interdependent species. But thanks to the power of capitalism that enhances our feelings of competition, greed, desperation and jealousy, we’re not usually very cognizant of our inherent communal connection. Now that truth is laid out—or sprayed out—in “droplets,” statistics, “community spread,” sickness and death.
This despite the misleading, self-adoring, stock market-fellating, “I don’t take responsibility at all” putrid blather the Trumpus pulls out of his Rumpus (where’s that toilet paper when we need it?) at these unsafe press conferences he tries, in vain, to turn into rallies. Though he does fancy himself to be a Wartime President.
Of course, we started this war. And I don’t mean Mr. Tomato Head’s trumped up wars with China and whoever disagrees with him; I mean humanity’s war on the rest of nature.
Over the past few thousand years, especially the last century, we have made the Earth and its atmosphere sick as a COVID-19 patient, feverish with global warming, hurricane sneezes, fiery coughing fits, the damaged lungs of the rainforests and atmospheric shortness of breath. In short, human civilization has been a plague upon the Earth. Now, in a science fiction-like way, the Earth appears to be fighting back against its human plague by dropping this horrible modern plague, Coronavirus. Like a bomb. On us.
The Coronapocalypse is a war of wars, yet everything we *know* about war does not apply. Wars are typically fought with guns, grenades and guided missiles; the war against COVID-19 is fought with swab tests, ventilators, face masks and hand sanitizer. In traditional wars, the old send the young to fight and die for their corporate investments. In the Coronavirus War, the old are most likely to die, as the young alternate between fighting valiantly on the hospital frontlines and spreading the virus willy-nilly. This is almost always inadvertent; many are contagious for days before symptoms appear. But sometimes it’s deliberate with active “Boomer Removers” spitting on fruit in your local Ralph’s. Ironically, as the virus spreads, more young people are getting sick and dying in this war too. That Mother Nature is such a trickster.
In other American wars in the past 80 years, except for the occasional “terrorist,” the U.S. military has been doing the killing and dying in some faraway place, while here at home, we continue life as usual, barely aware of the havoc America wreaks on other nations. Now we know what it’s like to shut ourselves into our homes, crazed with fear and boredom, waiting for the bombs to drop.
Another difference between this war and others is the folks in uniform. I have never felt like thanking our troops for fighting, killing and helping to perpetuate our Perma-Wars; they don’t “protect” us from anything except the good will of other peoples. But I get down on my proverbial knees to thank our doctors, nurses and medical technicians who are facing this “enemy” with as much courage as the most decorated soldiers have ever faced combat, and with a lot more integrity, life-saving value and genuine service.
Wouldn’t it be great, smart and very bonoboesque to take 95% of the ridiculously bloated U.S. military budget and spend it on COVID-19 tests, ventilators, respirators, masks, gowns and other necessities? While we’re at it, let’s bring most of those troops home to help the first responders and medical teams fight this real-life enemy of the people.

Short of that, American billionaires ought to stop worrying about Wall Street and start buying supplies. Some are doing that, but their contributions are far from enough. It’s one thing to hoard toilet paper; it’s quite another to hoard billions of dollars when, due to a lack of basic medical necessities, your fellow citizens are dying in such high numbers that stacks of bodies are being hauled away in freezer trucks.
Love in the Time of Coronavirus
What about sex?
Sadly, the coronavirus is, in a way, a sexually transmitted disease (STD), a plague of human physical intimacy, as are all viruses. Not that we need to have sex to *catch* these colds, flus and viruses; all that’s required is that we be close to each other, inhale each other’s breath, somehow ingest each other’s germs or even just pick up each other’s phones.
How can we have sex without being close? How can we connect as we self-isolate? How can we make love in the time of Coronavirus (with apologies to Gabriel Garcia Marquez)?
As a sex therapist who counsels others to explore and enjoy the pleasures and healing benefits of consensual touch, it feels odd to advise people, including myself, to do the opposite in order to save their lives. Talk about an about-face! But here we are.
Not that you can’t have any sex, but I, a proud bonoboesque pansexualist, must agree with the New York City Department of Health (NYCDOH) COVID-19 guidelines that say it’s better to just “love the one you’re self-isolating with,” at least when it comes to in-person sex.
That means just one or, as the NYCDOH liberally suggests, “a small circle” of sex partners that you can really trust (how you know whom you can “really trust” is another story). Monogamy may be unnatural for humans, but it has never been so sensible. Having in-person casual sex is playing Russian Roulette… at least until they make a special sex-friendly hazmat suit, which is coming, I’m sure. But not soon enough.
Fun Fact: COVID-19, though swimming in saliva, has not been found in semen or vaginal fluid. Unfortunately for the analinguists out there, it has been found in fecal matter. Therefore, NYCDOH guidelines warn: “No rimming” (don’t you just love that kinky specificity in a metropolitan health office?). It’s great that the NYCDOH is hip to rimming. But does that mean other kinds of oral sex are okay?
And how do we even get to that point if we’re staying six feet apart? Nobody’s that well-hung.
What do we do if we’re single and dating? It sounds cumbersome, but maybe the exhibitionists among us could set up plastic booths and perform peep shows for our dates.
There are other ways to handle the six-foot rule. Personally, I think it’s a good time to eat raw garlic because 1) it’s good for your immune system and 2) it keeps people from getting close to you.
Of course, when we say “close,” we mean physically close. We simply can’t (or shouldn’t) get physically close to someone we’re not self-isolating with. A tale of two cities during the H1N1 influenza pandemic of 1918 demonstrates how important it is to play “keep away”: After a few cases of the deadly virus floated into Philadelphia and St. Louis, Philly held a big, crowded, military parade while St. Louis shut everything down.
Within days, the City of Brotherly Love was overwhelmed by the “Spanish Flu” (which was really the “Kansas Flu,” as that’s where it started, but the WWI-neutral Spaniards were the first to report on it, so got stuck with the name), killing more than 12,000 Philadelphians in six weeks, while St. Louis “flattened the curve” and kept their death toll under 700. My father was one of the thousands of Philadelphia children who caught the influenza of 1918. Obviously, he survived and lived a full life, but he contracted Parkinson’s Disease towards the end; it is said by some that H1N1 may have led to Parkinson’s, so this hits me close to home.
I wonder what scars might be carried by those who “recover” from COVID-19.
“Kissing through the Waves of the Web”
So, here we are playing physical “keep away” on a grand scale. Really, “social-distancing” is a misnomer. It makes it sound like we have to stop socializing, communicating or caring about one another. That’s not very bonobo, or very human. It also sounds rather anti-socialism (even Democratic Socialism).
I prefer the term “physical distancing,” which is bad enough, but not as bad. To “flatten the curve,” we need to “physically distance” ourselves from each other, but we can maintain, expand and deepen our social relationships through our otherwise demonic devices to our social-lite/influencer hearts’ content.
Yes, our devices can be vices—bad habits, stupefying sources of alienation, depression, misinformation and a host of other ills. But in our war against COVID-19, they may prove to be lifesavers, a vital means of communication, a loneliness balm, a means to let off steam, and a way to stay in touch without touching.
Alas, we don’t all have balconies from which we can sing our solidarity, like the Italian flash mobs… though as balcony scenes go, the New York couple getting married on the sidewalk under the minister’s fourth floor apartment window is a good one.
Not that we all should be singing through the pandemic, as evidenced by the cringe-worthy ruination of John Lennon’s “Imagine” in the voices of Gal Gadot and her clueless celebrity cohorts. Celebrities in general tend to be tone deaf on these global concerns, but exceptions to the rule include Fran Drescher Nanny-spanking “capitalism” and the surprisingly socialist pop princess-turned-MILF Britney Spears exhorting us to “write virtual love letters… learn to kiss and hold each other through the waves of the web. We will feed each other, re-distribute wealth, strike.. Communion moves beyond walls” (italics mine).
Amen and Awomen, Comrade Britney! And thanks for the three rose emojis, a Springy symbol of the Democratic Socialists of America.
Still, it’s so sad we can’t kiss. Kissing could be one culprit, besides intergenerational housing (another lovely Old World tradition), in the deadly COVID-19 spreads of Italy, France and Spain, countries where everybody kisses everybody else, at least once on each cheek, sometimes twice. Those gentle pecks on the cheek are so delightful, and now… fatal.
Bonobos love to kiss, showing us how basic to our Great Ape heritage is the desire to lock lips and swap saliva. But with COVID-19, a simple smooch can be the kiss of death.
So, we must try to “kiss… through the waves of the web,” express solidarity through social media, convey compassion, organize efforts, send money and wave to each other from our Microsoft Windows. We can communicate harmony and disharmony, share poetry, ideas, frustrations, kinship. We can cry with each other on the phone. We can make each other laugh online. Laughter is a mental orgasm, and almost as important to human health as consensual touch. Deprived of the latter, we’re going to need plenty of the former.
The interesting thing about “sensory deprivation” is that it makes our un-deprived senses even more acute. When you can’t see, your ability to hear is heightened. Without touch, our other senses might rise to the occasion, helping us to make love, or a kind of love (there are many kinds), through the sticky juicy interwebs, the Erotic Theater of the Mind. We can have phone sex, webcam, or sext each other. It’s not for everyone (though after a few more weeks of isolation, maybe it will be), but it’s possible to have a very “close,” intimate yet “virtual” conversation—even a long-term relationship—over our vice-filled devices.
And yet… physical touch is so vital to mammalian—especially primate—life. Most primates don’t have as much sex as bonobos, but almost all thrive on grooming, petting, hugging, playing with and touching each other. Infant monkeys deprived of touch won’t eat, get sick and die. The human primate is not much different.
Tragically, COVID-19 is not only a human virus, but also deadly to great apes, including bonobos. A shred of good news is that China is closing its wild animal markets, and other countries are following suit, but poachers in the Congolese Rainforest are still murdering bonobos and other endangered species as “bushmeat,” even though it’s illegal. It pains me to say it, but if bonobos catch Coronavirus, they will almost inevitably give it to each other, as touch is integral to their lives.
Consensual touch is pretty integral to human life too, but we can force ourselves to forego it, with willpower and, let’s call it what it is, tremendous self-repression.
This is a big sacrifice—much bigger than the Dow plummeting—that we as humans all must make.
So… don’t touch your friends, strangers, neighbors, anybody except your significant other(s). And scrub those hands raw before and after you do. And whatever you do, don’t touch your face! Though everyone does, even Dr. Fauci.
But you can touch yourself. And in this case, below the belt is better than above the neck.
Isolation Sex
Back to the NYCDOH which is downright effusive in its unequivocal support of masturbation: “You are your own safest sex partner.”
I’ve been extolling the virtues of masturbation for decades, as has my mentor, the Godmother of Masturbation, Dr. Betty Dodson, and other sexperts, often to sniggers, hypocritical outrage and Puritanical censorship. When Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders suggested that masturbation be considered a safer sex alternative in school sexuality classes, President Bill Clinton fired her (he, of all people, should have taken her advice). No, Dr. J didn’t mean the gym teacher conducts a circle jerk; she meant that school sex education programs list solo sex, along with condoms, dry-humping and abstinence, as a way to avoid STDs.
I guess it took a lethal pandemic to turn the authorities around to our point of view, but here we are. The NYCDOH is officially begging you to masturbate. Hallelujah.
You may think of sex as “dirty,” but as was always the case, even before the pandemic, wash your hands before you start choking the chicken or polishing the pearl. As my mom used to say, “Your hands are dirty and it’s clean down there!”
Everybody’s self-pleasuring now, even Trumpublicans. This is a good thing, except maybe when former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee tweets out that he really likes shoving corn cobs up his ass:
“Those of us from rural south know how to handle toilet paper shortage. Eat more corn on the cob! The corn isn’t important, but the cobs are free and work great! (Just don’t flush them!) You’re welcome!”
Corn cobs: Mother Nature’s own dildos. Though I prefer cucumbers.
But don’t you still need that human connection? While maintaining scrupulous “physical distancing,” you can put the old AT&T jingle into practice: Reach out and touch someone (virtually)… while you touch yourself. Phone sex is a lot sexier than abstinence, safer than a hazmat suit and very stimulating in a sapiosexual way. It’s aural sex. I adore the romantic mystery of the phone, but if you’re visual, bump uglies on webcam. If you’re self-isolating in the family room with your parents or kids, get into sexting. On second thought, maybe you shouldn’t be masturbating in the family room…
Nobody said this would be easy. But, to quote an oft-used cliché right now: We will get through this!
Actually, only some of us will. The cold, breathless truth is that cases and fatalities are mounting every day, and any one of us could be next.
Hopefully, those of us who do “get through this” will have learned something about love, ecology, caring, sharing, communication, masturbation and our entire society’s need for universal healthcare (thanks Bernie!). Hopefully, the survivors of the Coronavirus Spring (and Summer?) will have learned how and why it’s important to get back into Mother Earth’s good graces.
Now that you’ve read this dirty article, wash your hands and get busy!

The Battle of Los Angeles - Photo Analysis
by Bruce Maccabee from Brumac Website

This is a discussion of the photographic print obtained by Frank Warren which was made from the original negative. Several different versions are presented in an effort to understand the nature of the “object” (dense smoke? solid body?) at the convergence of the beams.
The date of the photo is Feb 25, 1942.
The story of the Battle of Los Angeles near the start of WWII as told by newspapers and witnesses from several sources follows the photo analysis. If anyone has further information on this event, please contact me through this web site.
First we have the print as provided by Frank Warren:
Next we have some enhanced versions:
Sometimes it is helpful to see a negative.
One presumes that this is what the actual negative looks like.

The caption under photo reads:
“SEEKING OUT OBJECT - Scores of searchlights built a wigwam of light beams over Los Angeles early yesterday morning during the alarm. This picture was taken during blackout; shows nine beams converging on an object in sky in Culver City area. The blobs of light which show at apex of beam angles were made by anti-aircraft shells.”
To get the true relative image brightnesses it is necessary to scan the original negative and then adjust the “gamma” (relation between film image density and the about of light which made the image) to match the gamma at development. This is typically 1, but they may have pushed the film to a higher gamma to get faint images.
There may well be information on the shape of the “object” which is not discernible from the print because apparently the exposure level of the “object” is quite high and so the image may be well into the range of brightness saturation of the print. IF this is so, i.e., if the print image is well saturated, no amount of analysis will “dig out” the totality of brightness information (variations in the high brightness levels) contained within the negative.
I don’t know the film speed or the f stop of the camera. However, I would guess that the f-stop was low (lens “wide open”; f/2 or 3?) and that this is a time exposure because,
the light beams show up there are quite a few “explosions” (I presume) which probably did not happen all at once
The exposure could have been several seconds.
The fact that the beams basically do not get past the “object” (there is some faint evidence of beams above the object), whatever was at the beam convergence must have been optically quite dense. If there was a lot of smoke swirling around the volume of air illuminated by the beams, I would expect to see variations in bream brightness (brighter where there was smoke).
There are variations, but they are uniform and agree with the distance (from the searchlight) and width of the beam. That is, the variations are consistent with each beam getting dimmer as it travels away from the searchlight. IF there were smoke within any beam it should cause an increase in scattered light where there is smoke (which is how we see the beams anyway... light bounced or scattered from dust or smoke particles in the air).
The beams are quite bright before they reach the “object” and zero or nearly zero afterward. Just how much optical density of smoke this requires I do not know. However, certainly a solid metallic object would be sufficient to block the beams.
How large is the “object”? If we knew the distance of the camera from the beam convergence and the focal length of the camera we could calculate the approximate size. This requires knowing what portion of the city the object was over, where the cameraman was, and the altitude of the “object.” An alternative method is to estimate the diameter of a spotlight beam at some distance from the spotlight and use that width as a reference size.
I found a research article by Dr. Louis Eltermann that reports research in the latter 1940’s in which he used an army searchlight to probe the upper atmosphere in order to determine the vertical distribution of dust in the atmosphere.
Note: Eltermann was the author of the infamous Project Twinkle Report in November, 1951, which ignored or “covered up” or, at the very least, misrepresented, the White Sands movie film that proved unidentified objects were flying around. See THE UFO-FBI CONNECTION by Bruce Maccabee [Llewellyn, St. Paul, MN, 2000. Also,]
Eltermann described the searchlight as being 5 ft in diameter and with a divergence of about 1.25 degrees or about 20 milliradians. This means that the diameter at a distance d from the mirror would be about D = 5’+0.02d. Thus at 1000 ft the diameter would be about 25 ft. Of course, the beam is not uniformly bright across its diameter, so the effective diameter might be closer to 20 feet.
Consider the beam at the right side of the photo.
It protrudes upward at some angle, probably not the angle in the photo. Suppose the elevation angle were 30 degrees. The “object” width is oriented horizontally (parallel to the ground) whereas the beam is assumed to be tilted at about 30 degrees. Hence the horizontal width of the beam, W, (not perpendicular to the beam axis) would be W = D/sin (angle of elevation) = D/sin(30) = 2D for the assumed 30 degree elevation angle.
Hence if the object were 1000 ft from the projection lens it was about 2 x 25 = 50 ft wide.
If at 2000 ft the calculation yields D = 45 ft and W = 90 ft.
One estimate of the height of the object was 8,000 ft. For a 30 degree slant angle of the beam from ground level up to 8,000 ft the distance along the beam would be about 8,000/sin 30 = 16,000 ft. If this were so, then the beam diameter at that height would have been about 165 ft and the horizontal width of the object would have been about 330 ft.
If the slant angle of the beam was less than 30 degrees then the calculated sizes would have been larger. Conversely, if the slant angle was greater the calculated sizes would have been smaller.
Based on the above calculations, and realizing that a much better estimate could be made if we had more accurate information on the spotlights, camera, etc., I would hazard a guess that the width of the illuminated “object” is on the order of 100 ft or more in size.
Without more solid information to go on this has to be no more than a WAG (wild...rear-end... guess) (but I bet its close to right!)

The following are excerpts from the primary front page story of the LA Times on February 26th. Note that there is not a SINGLE description of the object even though is was clearly locked in the focus of dozens of searchlights for well over half an hour and seen by hundreds of thousands of people:
Army Says Alarm Real Roaring Guns Mark Blackout Identity of Aircraft Veiled in Mystery; No Bombs Dropped and No Enemy Craft Hit; Civilians Reports Seeing Planes and Balloon Overshadowing a nation-wide maelstrom of rumors and conflicting reports, the Army’s Western Defense Command insisted that Los Angeles’ early morning blackout and anti-aircraft action were the result of unidentified aircraft sighted over the beach area. In two official statements, issued while Secretary of the Navy Knox in Washington was attributing the activity to a false alarm and “jittery nerves,” the command in San Francisco confirmed and reconfirmed the presence over the Southland of unidentified planes.
Relayed by the Southern California sector office in Pasadena, the second statement read: “The aircraft which caused the blackout in the Los Angeles area for several hours this a.m. have not been identified.” Insistence from official quarters that the alarm was real came as hundreds of thousands of citizens who heard and saw the activity spread countless varying stories of the episode.
The spectacular anti-aircraft barrage came after the 14th Interceptor Command ordered the blackout when strange craft were reported over the coastline. Powerful searchlights from countless stations stabbed the sky with brilliant probing fingers while anti-aircraft batteries dotted the heavens with beautiful, if sinister, orange bursts of shrapnel.
City Blacked Out For Hours The city was blacked out from 2:25 to 7:21 am after an earlier yellow alert at 7:18 pm was called off at 10:23 pm. The blackout was in effect from here to the Mexican border and inland to the San Joaquin Valley. No bombs were dropped and no airplanes shot down and, miraculously in terms of the tons of missiles hurled aloft, only two persons were reported wounded by falling shell fragments.
Countless thousands of Southland residents, many of whom were late to work because of the traffic tie-up during the blackout, rubbed their eyes sleepily yesterday and agreed that regardless of the question of how “real” the air raid alarm may have been, it was “a great show” and “well worth losing a few hours’ sleep.”
The blackout was not without its casualties, however. A State Guardsman died of a heart attack while driving an ammunition truck, heart failure also accounted for the death of an air raid warden on duty, a woman was killed in a car-truck collision in Arcadia, and a Long Beach policeman was killed in a traffic crash enroute to duty.
Much of the firing appeared to come from the vicinity of aircraft plants along the coastal area of Santa Monica, Inglewood, Southwest Los Angeles, and Long Beach.
The Times editorial reads:
“In view of the considerable public excitement and confusion caused by yesterday morning’s supposed enemy air raid over this area and its spectacular official accompaniments, it seems to The Times that more specific public information should be forthcoming from government sources on the subject, if only to clarify their own conflicting statements about it.” “According to the Associated Press, Secretary Knox intimated that reports of enemy air activity in the Pacific Coastal Region might be due largely to ‘jittery nerves.’ Whose nerves, Mr. Knox? The public’s or the Army’s?”

Army Gunners Fire At UFOs Over Los Angeles Courtesy UFO ROUNDUP Volume 3, Number 8 February 22, 1998 Editor Joseph Trainor On Wednesday, February 25, 1942, at precisely 2 a.m., diners at the trendy Trocadero Club in Hollywood were startled when the lights winked out and air raid sirens began to sound throughout greater Los Angeles.
“Searchlights scanned the skies and anti-aircraft guns protecting the vital aircraft and ship-building factories went into action. In the next few hours they would fire over 1,400 shells at an unidentified, slow- moving object in the sky over Los Angeles that looked like a blimp, or a balloon.”
Author Ralph Blum, who was a nine-year-old boy at the time, wrote that he thought “the Japanese were bombing Beverly Hills.”
“There were sirens, searchlights, even antiaircraft guns blamming away into the skies over Los Angeles. My father had been a balloon observation man (in the AEF) in World War One, and he knew big guns when he heard them. He ordered my mother to take my baby sisters to the underground projection room—our house was heavily supplied with Hollywood paraphernalia—while he and I went out onto the upstairs balcony.” “What a scene! It was after three in the morning. Searchlights probed the western sky. Tracers streamed upward. The racket was terrific.”
Shooting at the aerial intruders were gunners of the 65th Coast Artillery (Anti-Aircraft) Regiment in Inglewood and the 205th Anti-Aircraft Regiment based in Santa Monica. The “white cigar-shaped object” took several direct hits but continued on its eastward flight.
Up to 25 silvery UFOs were also seen by observers on the ground.
Editor Peter Jenkins of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner reported,
“I could clearly see the V formation of about 25 silvery planes overhead moving slowly across the sky toward Long Beach.”
Long Beach Police Chief J.H. McClelland said,
“I watched what was described as the second wave of planes from atop the seven-story Long Beach City Hall. I did not see any planes but the younger men with me said they could. An experienced Navy observer with powerful Carl Zeiss binoculars said he counted nine planes in the cone of the searchlight. He said they were silver in color. The (UFO) group passed along from one battery of searchlights to another, and under fire from the anti-aircraft guns, flew from the direction of Redondo Beach and Inglewood on the land side of Fort MacArthur, and continued toward Santa Ana and Huntington Beach. Anti-aircraft fire was so heavy we could not hear the motors of the planes.”
Reporter Bill Henry of the Los Angeles Times wrote,
“I was far enough away to see an object without being able to identify it...I would be willing to bet what shekels I have that there were a number of direct hits scored on the object.”
At 2:21 a.m., Lt. Gen. John L. DeWitt issued the cease-fire order, and the twenty-minute “battle of Los Angeles” was over.

ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS BLAST AT L.A. MYSTERY INVADER Raid Scare Blacks Out Southland, but Knox Claims ‘False Alarm’
Glendale News Press Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1942
Washington (AP)
- Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox said today that there were no planes over Los Angeles last night.
“That’s our understanding,” he said. He added that “ none have been found and a very wide reconnaissance has been carried on.”
He added, “it was just a false alarm.”
Anti-aircraft guns thundered over the metropolitan area early today for the first time in the war, but hours later what they were shooting at remained a military secret. An unidentified object moving slowly down the coast from Santa Monica was variously reported as a balloon and an airplane.
No bombs were dropped and no planes were shot down during the anti-aircraft firing in the Los Angeles area, the western defense command said in San Francisco.
“Cities in the Los Angeles area were blacked out at 2:25 a.m. today on orders from the fourth interceptor command when unidentified aircraft were reported in the area,” the western defense command said. “Although reports are conflicting and every effort is being made to ascertain the facts, it is clear that no bombs were dropped and no planes were shot down.” “There was a considerable amount of anti-aircraft firing. The all-clear signal came at 7:25 a.m.”
Army Scofts at Civilian Reports
Army intelligence, although uncommunicative, scoffed at reports of civilian observers that as many as 200 planes were over the area.
There were no reports of dropping bombs, but several instances of damaged property from anti-aircraft shells. A garage door was ripped off in a Los Angeles residential district and fragments shattered windows and tore into a bed where a few moments before Miss Blanch Sedgewick and her niece, Josie Duffy had been sleeping.
A Santa Monica bomb squad was dispatched to remove an unexploded anti-aircraft shell in a driveway there.
Wailing air raid sirens at 2:25 a.m. awakened most of the metropolitan’s three million citizens. A few minutes later they were treated to a gigantic Fourth-of-July-like display as huge searchlights flashed along a 10-mile front to the south, converging on a single spot high in the sky.
Anti-Aircraft Guns Open Fire Moments later the anti-aircraft guns opened up, throwing a sheet of steel skyward. Tracer bullets and exploding shells lit the heavens.
Three Japanese, two men and a woman, were seized at the beach city of Venice on suspicion of signaling with flashlights near the pier. They were removed to FBI headquarters, where Richard B. Hood, local chief, said, “at the request of Army authorities we have nothing to say.”
A Long Beach police sergeant, E. Larsen 59, was killed in a traffic accident while in route to an air raid post. Henry B. Ayers, 63-year-old state guardsman, died at the wheel of an ammunition truck during the black-out. Physicians said a heart attack was apparently responsible.
Rumors of Planes Downed Spiked Police ran down several reports that planes had been shot down, but said all were false alarms. Aircraft factories continued operation behind blackened windows, while ack-ack guns rattled from batteries stationed near-by.
A Japanese vegetable man, John Y. Harada, 25, was one of three persons arrested on charges of violating a county black ordinance. Sheriff’s Capt. Ernest Sichler said Harada, driving to the market with a load of cauliflower, refused to extinguish his truck lights.
Others held on similar charges were Walter E. Van Der Linden, Norwalk dairy man, accused of failing to darken his milking barns, and Giovanni Ghigo, 57, nabbed while driving to market with a truckload of flowers.
Traffic Snarl Follows All Clear Signal Soon traffic was snarled. Thousand of southern Californians were an hour or more late to their jobs. There were isolated incidences of failure to comply with black-out regulations. Neon signs were glowing inside stores. Traffic signals continued to flash in some areas.
Radio stations went off the air with the first alert, and were not permitted to resume broadcasting until 8:23 a.m.
There was speculation, that the unidentified object, might have been a blimp-although veteran lighter-then-air-experts in Akron, O., the nations center of such construction, said Japan was believed to have lost interest in such craft following experiments in World War I. These sources said inability to obtain fire proof helium caused discarding of such plans.
Observers lent some credence to the blimp theory by pointing out that the object required nearly thirty minutes to travel 20 or 25 miles-far slower then an airplane.
Unidentified Planes Pass Over Harbor AN official source which declined to be quoted directly told The Associated Press in Los Angeles that United States Army Planes quickly went into action. Later however, another official said no United States craft had taken off because of possible danger from the army’s own anti-aircraft fire.
A newspaper man at San Pedro said airplanes passed over the Los Angeles-Long Beach harbor area. The craft were not identified.
There were no reports of any attempt to bomb southern California from the air although many war-vital factories, shipyards and other defense industries were on the route the object followed.
Although some watchers said they saw airplanes in the air, semi-official sources said they probably were the United States Army’s pursuits. All the action, clearly spotlighted for ground observers by 20 or so searchlights, was just a few miles west of Los Angeles proper.
Object Disappears Over Signal Hill Observers said the object appeared to be 8000 ft or higher. Firing, first heard at 3 a.m., ceased suddenly at 3:30 a.m., after the object disappeared south of Signal Hill, at the east edge of Long Beach. Anti-aircraft guns fired steadily for two minute periods, were silent for about 45 seconds, and continued that routine for nearly a half an hour.
All of southern California from the San Juaquin valley to the Mexican border was blacked out. Los Angeles doused its lights first, at 2:25 a.m.. San Diego, just 17 miles from the border did not receive its lights out order until 3:05 a.m.
When daylight and the all-clear signal came, Long Beach took on the appearance of a huge Easter egg-hunt. Kiddies and even grown-ups scrambled through the streets and vacant lots, picking up and proudly comparing chunks of shrapnel fragments as if they were the most prized possession they owned.
Recent testimony:
H.C. writes: I’m a WWII veteran. Just thought I’d let you know that I was an eyewitness to the event back in February of 1942. I was 14 at the time, living in the Adams and Crenshaw area of Los Angeles. My family and I observed the entire episode through the large bay window of our home facing west. The air raid sirens awoke us at 2 AM.
There was a period of silence following that, then the thumping of antiaircraft fire. The northwest sky was lit up with bursting shells and searchlights. The action was moving south along the coastline. I remember distinctly the convergence of searchlights reflecting off the bottom of some kind of slow moving objects, apparently flying in formation.
They seemed to be completely oblivious and impervious to the shells exploding around them. I was quite the aviation buff back then, as I am now, but I must admit that I had a devil of a time trying to identify the objects, what with the awe, excitement and speculation of the moment, the bursting shells, tracers, etc. I was surprised in the days that followed to discover that with all that aggressive firepower there was no evidence that we had brought anything down. I lived on Virginia Road, a half block south of West Adams Boulevard and one-quarter mile south of what is now the Interstate 10 Santa Monica Freeway; about 5.5 miles southwest of what is now the Los Angeles Civic Center; and approximately 10.5 miles due east of the Pacific coastline of Santa Monica. We were looking in a westward direction from our large living room bay window which gave us an unobstructed panorama of view facing the northwest, west and southwest. We then went to our south-facing kitchen and porch windows to observe the action where it culminated in the south. Ergo, the action followed the coastline. It could have been two, or three, or up to six miles away, I can’t recall exactly since it occurred so long ago. But I strongly remember the searchlights converging on the bottoms of the reddish objects flying in formation
Scott Littleton writes:
I was an eye-witness to the events of that unforgettable February morning in February of 1942. I was eight-years-old at the time, and my parents lived at 2500 Strand in Hermosa Beach, right on the beach. We thus had a grandstand seat.
While my father went about his air-raid warden duties, my late mother and I watched the glowing object, which was caught in the glare of searchlights from both Palos Verdes and Malibu/Pacific/Palisades and surrounded by the puffs of ineffectual anti-aircraft fire, as it slowly flew across the ocean from northwest to southeast. It headed inland over Redondo Beach, a couple of miles to the south of our vantage point, and eventually disappeared over the eastern end of the Palos Verdes hills, what’s today called Rancho Palos Verdes.
The whole incident last, at least from our perspective, lasted about half an hour, though we didn’t time it. Like other kids in the neighborhood, I spend the next morning picking up of pieces of shrapnel on the beach; indeed, it’s a wonder more people weren’t injured by the stuff, as we were far from the only folks standing outside watching the action. In any case, I don’t recall seeing any truly discernable configuration, just a small, glowing, slight lozenge-shaped blob light-a single, blob, BTW. We only saw one object, not several as some witnesses later reported. At the time, we were convinced that it was a “Jap” reconnaissance plane, and that L.A. might be due for a major air-raid in the near future. Remember, this was less than three months after Pearl Harbor. But that of course never happened. Later on, we all expected “them,” that is, the Military, to tell us what was really up there after the war.
But that never happened, either...

2019.08.14 01:21 Zinkzd IPVanish Review - Why its a great VPN

IPVanish is a popular VPN service particularly with Android and Fire TV Stick users, and it makes a very strong claim on its homepage – that it’s the “World’s Best VPN.”
Seen this sort of statement before, right? It’s certainly one of the leading VPN providers out there, but is it really the best VPN overall?
We never take a provider’s word for it, so we decided to put IPVanish to the test – a very extensive one – to see if its claims are to be believed.
We were particularly keen to find out:
How good is IPVanish? Is it safe to use? Is IPVanish very fast? Does it work with Netflix? Is torrenting and P2P allowed? Is it the best VPN app for Firestick? But before we answer each of these (and many more) questions, lets see the pros and cons of IPVanish VPN:
Pros Cons Very impressive speeds Works with Netflix Great for torrenting & Kodi No-logs policy & no IP/DNS/WebRTC leaks User-friendly apps for PC, Mac, iOS, & Android Good server network across 50 countries Won't work with BBC iPlayer, or in China Short refund period Based in privacy-unfriendly US Desktop app could be more user-friendly Works with
Netflix, HBO, Torrenting, Kodi
Available on
Windows Mac Ios Android Linux Price from
As you can see IPVanish certainly does have many strengths to shout about.
It’s now time to take a very close look at the attributes and features of each IPVanish app, starting with how fast it is.
Speed & Reliability IPVanish is a consistently fast VPN
IPVanish is a very fast VPN service, with some of the quickest speeds we’ve seen in our tests.
IPVanish didn’t slow down our connection too much, and it is more than fast enough for HD or 4K streaming.
Speed results from our physical location in London (100Mbps fibre optic connection) to a London test server.
Before using IPVanish:
DOWNLOAD Mbps 93.76
UPLOAD Mbps 97.58
PING ms 2
When connected to IPVanish:
DOWNLOAD Mbps 84.13
UPLOAD Mbps 90.33
PING ms 7
Download speed without IPVanish: 93.76Mbps
Download speed with IPVanish: 84.13Mbps
Our download speed loss when IPVanish is running: 10%
Downloads, uploads and latency when using IPVanish are among the best we’ve seen, making this VPN a very smart choice for gamers and torrenters alike.
It’s also one of the most reliable VPN services we’ve seen, providing consistently fast speeds from one test to the next.
Here are the average speeds you can expect when using IPVanish to connect out to various locations around the world (from the UK):
USA: 53Mbps (download) & 37Mbps (upload) Germany: 76Mbps (download) & 81Mbps (upload) Singapore: 25Mbps (download) & 2Mbps (upload) Australia: 24Mbps (download) & 6Mbps (upload) Server Locations Over 40,000 IP addresses across 77 locations
Globe with a blue flag 50 Countries Image of a city landscape 77 Cities Image of a pink marker 40,000+ IP Addresses See all Server Locations IPVanish VPN gives access to more than 1,300 servers worldwide and over 40,000 IP addresses, which is one of the highest numbers of IP addresses we’ve ever seen. This means that you’re unlikely to experience VPN server congestion and slow speeds while connected to IPVanish.
The 50 countries in IPVanish’s VPN server network are well spread-out, including some less common nations like Moldova and the Philippines (in addition to all the typical countries like US, UK, Canada, Australia, and more).
List of IPVanish server locations
IPVanish provides its customers with city-level options in the US (19 cities), UK (4), Canada (3) Australia (2) and Brazil (2).
US-based users can choose from IPVanish servers in:
Central – Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Jackson, Milwaukee, St. Louis East – Ashburn, Atlanta, Boston, Cleveland, Miami, New York West – Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Jose, Seattle We’d love to see more city-level selections in Australia – mainly Perth which is located on the West coast – and more server options in South America, where only Brazil and Colombia are served.
The high number of VPN servers in IPVanish’s network is enough to offset these minor complaints, though.
IPVanish is one of the few VPN providers to own its entire (or very close to) server infrastructure, meaning they rent very few servers from third-parties.
Streaming & Torrenting Excellent choice for torrenting & Netflix
Despite IPVanish being one of the fastest VPNs we’ve seen, it’s just not a great VPN for streaming.
Most of IPVanish’s US servers work for Netflix, although it can occasionally take a while to load, but all of its UK servers are currently blocked by BBC iPlayer and according to IPVanish they are not looking to work on fixing this.
If streaming BBC iPlayer is important to you, read through our dedicated guide or take a look at our NordVPN or CyberGhost reviews, two VPN services that work well with BBC iPlayer.
IPVanish has also confirmed it isn’t working with Amazon Prime Video or Hulu at the moment.
Torrenting IPVanish is, however, one of the best VPN services for torrenting we’ve tested, with very fast speeds and a watertight logging policy.
Torrenting is permitted on all of its servers and when we checked for IP/DNS leaks, we found none.
Not to mention that it has a VPN kill switch, but more on this below.
Therefore, we recommend IPVanish VPN for all P2P activity including Kodi for which IPVanish is currently the #1 VPN service.
Bypassing Censorship No good for China
IPVanish is very upfront in saying that the VPN service won’t work in China, despite being equipped with an array of obfuscation tools.
We really appreciate IPVanish’s honesty on this topic. IPVanish also provides a useful list of other countries the VPN won’t work in: you can find this on the support section of the IPVanish website.

IPVanish states that it is “forbidden to do business in”:
Myanmar Cuba Iran North Korea Sudan Syria IPVanish states that its domain,, is blocked in:
Qatar Saudi Arabia United Arab Emirates (UAE) China Kazakhstan It’s not just IPVanish’s domain that is blocked in these countries, and many users have reported that IPVanish’s apps don’t work either.
If you live or are travelling to a high censorship country then we suggest you consider using VPN services like ExpressVPN or VyprVPN to bypass aggressive internet censors.

IPVanish is our number 1 VPN pick for the increasingly popular Amazon Firestick, and it’s super easy to install and use.
You can also use IPVanish on 10 devices at once, which is very generous (the average among the top VPN services is about 5 simultaneous connections).
You can also install IPVanish on your home router so that all your internet traffic at home is protected.
Browser Extensions Unfortunately, IPVanish doesn’t have any VPN browser extensions, which is a shame and one of the very few areas where it seriously lags behind its competitors.
If you want to use a VPN extension with your web browser then take a look at our:

Please see our VPN Glossary if these terms confuse you and would like to learn more.
We believe that IPVanish is one of the most secure and private VPN services available.
IPVanish mainly uses the OpenVPN and IKEv2 protocols and encrypts your online traffic with the ‘unbreakable’ AES-256 cipher, meaning you’re protected at all times. You can also connect using L2TP/IPsec, if you’d prefer.
IPVanish has a VPN kill switch to protect your privacy in case of a connection drop, plus a host of other advanced features to secure your web browsing. This includes SOCKS5 web proxy, which masks your IP address during P2P and VoIP connections – although this doesn’t encrypt traffic.
We also found IPVanish to be extremely safe, and free of IP or DNS leaks in our most recent tests:
IPVanish leak test results from IPVanish’s leak test results when connected to its Chicago server
Logging Policy No-logs policy makes up for US jurisdiction
IPVanish doesn’t collect any user data at all, making it a no-logs VPN service.
Considering most VPN logging policies track at least server load or login information for maintenance purposes, this is what makes IPVanish a standout VPN for privacy.
In 2016, when under previous management, IPVanish was however found to be collecting logs when it handed information over to US authorities to aid in the prosecution of a user.
Since being acquired a number of times since then, IPVanish has turned things around and we have no longer concerns about its approach to user privacy.
Jurisdiction IPVanish VPN was first released in 2012 by its former US-based owner HighWinds Network Group. IPVanish has since been acquired by StackPath and in 2019 by J2 Global which are both US-based companies.
As you can see IPVanish is, and has always been, operated by companies headquartered in the US, which does have very intrusive surveillance laws and is a member of the Five-Eyes data sharing agreement.
IPVanish being based in the US is largely irrelevant though as its no-logs policy means no identifiable information is collected by the VPN provider.
Ease of Use User-friendly install with lots of advanced features
How to Install & Set Up IPVanish Screenshot of the Windows download button on the IPVanish website Beginning the installation process is as simple as clicking the button to download the relevant software from the site.
Screenshot of the progress of our IPVanish Windows download You can check the progress of the installation here, but it usually only takes a couple of minutes from start to finish.
Screenshot of the completed IPVanish download Once the software is downloaded, you'll see this screen which prompts you to run the IPVanish app.
Screenshot of IPVanish's main dashboard on its Windows app IPVanish main dashboard shows key connection info and permits server selection. We like the nice graph too.
Screenshot of IPVanish's server list in the Windows app Power users will select servers from the main dashboard rather than the server list as it's a slicker experience.
Screenshot of the server location filters in the IPVanish desktop app IPVanish server list view with filters - it's mostly pretty good but not as optimal as using the main dashboard.
Screenshot of the advanced settings in IPVanish's desktop app IPVanish is rich with advanced settings for customizing connections and it's well laid out to boot. Nice!
IPVanish’s desktop VPN apps are perfectly simple to use, even if they could do with a bit of a visual overhaul as they are starting to look a little out-dated.
The advanced privacy settings are also easy to navigate, making IPVanish suited to both VPN beginners and more experienced users.
The mobile IPVanish apps lack a few key features, such as the VPN kill switch, but they do still provide a very good, user-friendly experience.
Customer Support Helpful support with 24/7 live chat

2019.05.24 05:31 iLikeReading Help with a office / programming / non-gaming PC Budget $700 - $1000

*** What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using **\*

I am looking to upgrade from my 2011 era laptop.
Lenovo Z570 laptop

My RAM and SSD upgrades have kept it running well but I have some issues:

As this is the main family computer (budget & financial files, family photos & videos), I want to upgrade to something better and more stable.

Primary goals

The Competition

Option 1

I almost pulled the trigger on the CostCo Dell 5676 from last week for $710
Cons to this:

Still wishing I had bought it though, for the warranty option. Could have added second SSD and eventually upgraded RAM

Option 2

I get a decent discount through work on Dell products, so can build this for $800 (before tax)I would need to immediately upgrade the RAM further, but has a optical drive (although writing Blu-ray is overkill)XPS 8930

Option 3

Just saw this come up for sale on NewEgg for $800

**What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?*\*

**When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.*\*

**What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc\)*\*

Really, need tower only

**Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?*\*

**Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?*\*

Not really interested in overclocking

**Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)*\*

**Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?*\*

**Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?*\*

**Main questions**\*

What range CPU should I be looking for now?

Should I go for 32 gb RAM?

Is there a real performance difference in SSD?

What is a good video card for my needs?

Guides / Inspirations is based in St. Louis, so would hope to get a local discount

Also used this as a general guide

Then, looked through some recent Slickdeals to pick out option.

My proposed build for $730 (prior to other discounts)

CPU AMD - Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor $148
Motherboard Asus - PRIME B450M-A/CSM Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard $79.89

2018.10.20 23:46 muse933277 11 Great Places Where You Can Meet Women

No, a girl won't magically appear in your life if you stay home all day browsing forums, jacking off to porn, or watching Netflix all day. If you want a girlfriend or simply want to get laid, you actually need to get out there and interact with women.
Which is why, i'm going to give you 10 possible places you can go to if you want to meet women.
So without further ado, here is da list!
Volunteer Somewhere. Volunteering can be a good place to meet like-minded people, and even people you want to date. A good place to volunteer is somewhere with a high concentration of women and ties in to your interests.
If you're sporty, you can try volunteering for the special Olympics. If you live in a decent-sized city with a decent-sized college or university, the majority of the volunteers are college students between the ages of 18 to 25. Track & Field, Volleyball, and Tennis are good events to volunteer for. Volleyball obviously has lots of girls, and track & field has many volunteers so chances are you will meet girls.
If you're into animals, you can try the humane society.
Various online dating sites. There's the traditional mainstream apps such as Tinder and Bumble which has many users and is predominantly a hookup app. However if you're not having much success on there, there's always other online dating sites/apps you can try.
There's a phone app called MeetMe, which is similar to Plenty of Fish except it is only for the phone and has a decent amount of users. There's also another dating app called Coffee Meets Bagel.
There's the traditional dating sites such as OkCupid and Plenty of Fish. There's also Zoosk and
There's niche dating sites. TasteBuds is a dating site which matches you with people based on shared musical interests.
Find Meetups In Your Local Area at is a site where people post their groups around your location to which anybody can sign up and go to. For instance, St Louis web developers get together, The diehard lovers of tennis group, Alexis Texas fanclub, etc... Chances are you might find a group that interests you, so you should check the website out,
Hey, you might meet the love of your life. ;)
here is the link.
If you're in college, through taking classes and asking them out.
Chances are if you're taking a class with at least 20 or more people, there's a high chance that there's at least a couple of cute girls in there. So why not take advantage of it?
Also if you're in college, by joining college clubs
You probably won't meet the love of your life joining the chess club or world of warcraft club.
Depending on the size of your college, there may be dozens of college clubs that you can join and chances are there is one that ties in to your interests. You may meet some cute girls in there.
If you're religious, join a bible study.
There's youth groups for those who are still in high school. But there's also college bible studies and even those for adults 30 or older.
Salsa/Dance Classes
The great thing about dance classes is that they are usually dominated by women. And even if you don't meet anybody, at least you have learned how to dance, ladies love a guy who can dance :)
Meeting girls through your friends
Chances are if you're like me and all of your friends are either nerds or animals, then this likely isn't an option.
However, if you have friends who are either popular or know lots of people, then this can be an option. For instance, let's just say you're somehow friends with a sorority girl, well sorority girls typically have lots of "sisters". Maybe you can convince her to set you up with one of her sisters. You'll basically be a part of the family.
The Dog Park
First off, you need to buy a dog first. (or steal your friends dog just for the day) and then head off to the nearest dog park.
Believe it or not, your dog can be your greatest wingman (wingdog actually) You just train him to run up to attractive girls and sniff and bark at them, then you rush on over and apologize for your dog's "misbehavior" ;) It's easy to start a conversation as well. All you have to do is ask her what kind of dog she has, your two start talking about your dogs, then before you know it, you're asking for her number.
Hitting up random girls on your friends list through Facebook
It's simple, just go through every attractive girl on your friends list and write them saying, Ayyyyyy gurl, lemme get dem digits. Don't worry, you'll only end up on Bye Felipe just a couple of times.
jk, don't do that. Facebook is not a dating site.
However in the near future, Facebook will be launching a dating feature on their site. You'll finally be able to hit up girls without being a creep.
Through Daygame/Cold Approach
What is day game? Day game is basically a form of cold approach where you are going around and talking to girls throughout the day time. (bars, nightclubs, and online dating is not day-game) For instance, you're at a coffee shop and you see a cute girl sitting by herself and you go talk to her, or you're walking down the street and you see this cute girl and you talk to her and get her number, these are examples of day-game.
Why consider doing day-game? Well when you only try to meet people through either common connections or common events such as work or volunteer, chances are there are only a handful of girls that you may get to meet and there is no guarantee that they will be single and actually like you back. However, with day game and cold approach, there are hundreds of women you could talk to and potentially go on a date with. And unlike online dating, you're not competing with dozens of other guys for her attention.
I'm not saying you should do day-game. You will probably get rejected a lot, but if you get good at it, you might have some success.
Get rich and famous
If you get rich and famous, you don't even have to chase girls, the girls will chase you.

2018.09.15 00:14 MKULTRA_Escapee Local chemical, biological, and entomological experimentation "chemtrails" has been proven many times in our recent history. This happened in Britain, Canada, and the U.S. They used airplanes, ships off the coast, cars, and blowers on top of buildings to spray chemicals or bacteria onto the public.

There are two different "chemtrail" arguments that are made. The crazy version says the government is constantly spraying us using commercial aircraft for purposes of mind control or combating global warming. I'm not arguing in favor of that today. What I'm arguing is that "chemtrails" are a proven historical fact and that they were used for experimentation. The public was not told until decades later, but these chemtrails were a bit smaller in scale compared to the modern US-wide chemtrail theories floating around.
Chemical, biological, and entomological experimentation "chemtrails" has been proven over and over in our recent history. This happened in Britain, Canada, and the United States. They used airplanes, ships off the coast, cars, blowers on top of buildings, etc. In some cases, they used real chemical or biological agents, and in other cases they used what they thought at the time were "harmless" agents as stand-ins. Both were used, which wasn't admitted to by the Defense Department until around 2002.
Chemtrail definition:
A visible trail left in the sky by an aircraft and believed by some to consist of chemical or biological agents released as part of a covert operation, rather than the condensed water of a vapour trail
You have to stretch the definition a bit to include spraying mosquitoes and fleas upon unsuspecting populations, but I included those here as well because they were a part of the biological weapons testing arena.
The US also tested releasing mosquitoes and fleas from planes.
Spray for you, but not for me:
I will leave you with 1 unproven case:

2018.06.16 23:37 muse933277 10 Places Where You Can Meet Women

No, a girl won't magically appear in your life if you stay home all day browsing forums, jacking off to porn, or watching Netflix all day. If you want a girlfriend or simply want to get laid, you need to get out there and interact with women.
Which is why, i'm going to give you 10 possible places you can go to if you want to meet women.
So without further ado, here is da list!
Volunteer Somewhere. Volunteering can be a good place to meet like-minded people, and even people you want to date.
Tennis goes on during the summer so consider signing up today.
Various online dating sites. There's the traditional mainstream apps such as Tinder and Bumble with many users and is predominantly a hookup app. However if you don't like using them there's always other online dating sites/apps you can try.
If you're in college, through taking classes and asking them out at the end of the semester.
Just be sure to stalk her Facebook beforehand to see if she has a boyfriend so you're not wasting your time.
Also if you're in college, by joining college clubs
You probably won't meet the love of your life joining the chess club or world of warcraft club.
If you're religious, join a bible study.
Girls over there need love too!
Maybe you can convince her to help you out.
The Dog Park
First off, you need to buy a dog first. (or steal your friends dog just for the day) and then head off to the nearest dog park.
Believe it or not, your dog can be your greatest wingman (wingdog actually) You just train him to run up to attractive girls and sniff and bark at them, then you rush on over and apologize for your dog's "misbehavior" ;) Then you ask her what kind of dog she has, your two start talking about your dogs, then before you know it, you're asking for her number.
Although in the future, Facebook will be launching a dating site so be on the lookout.
